Official Statement from Niki Lee Ethington, Candidate for U.S. Congress, Kentucky’s 4th District, Regarding the Assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and Her Husband on June 14, 2025

I’m sending my prayers and condolences to the family and friends of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were tragically assassinated in Minnesota today, June 14, 2025. My heart also goes out to Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were critically injured in a related act of violence. These tragedies strike not just Minnesota but resonate across our nation, serving as a painful reminder that public service can carry immense risk.

I want to be clear that violence has no place in our politics. It’s up to all of us to keep working toward a future where people can serve their communities without fear, where disputes are settled at the ballot box and not through violence. My thoughts and prayers are with the families, colleagues, and all who are hurting today and in the days ahead, as we collectively mourn and pray for healing.

Update: It has come to light the suspect, 57 year old Vance Luther Boelter, was a former appointee to Governor Tim Walz’s Workforce Development Board (2019- 2023).
